This classic 1964 television special featuring Rudolph and his misfit buddies set the standard for stop-motion animation for an entire generation before Tim Burton darkly reinvented it in the early 1990s. Burl Ives narrates as Sam the Snowman, telling and singing the story of a rejected reindeer who overcomes prejudice and saves Christmas one particularly blustery year. Along the way, he meets an abundance of unforgettable characters: his dentally obsessed elf pal Hermey; the affable miner Yukon Cornelius and his motley crew of puppies; the scary/adorable Abominable Snow Monster; a legion of abandoned, but still chatty, toys; and a rather grouchy Santa. In addition to the title song that inspired it, this 53-minute tape is crammed with catchy tunes such as "Silver and Gold" and "Holly Jolly Christmas." Those who grew up looking forward to watching Rudolph every Christmas season will undoubtedly be able to recite the quotable quotes ("I'm cuuuute. She said I'm cuuuute." For 2 years in a row Sony once again puts that stupid Destiny's Child crap on this Dvd. Why does Sony keep ruining Christmas classics like this and now Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town with a stupid Mariah Carey video. When is this dumb so-called trend going to stop. Leave the Christmas classics(Rudolf,Frosty,Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town)as is.Please, NO MORE EXTRA SONGS & VIDEOS...these are not good extras they are just pure crap!!!

The DVD transfer is pretty good but the scene with Yukon discovering peppermint has been cut. It seems pretty odd to sell a DVD as a restored classic only to leave out the main thing that was to be restored!

Come on! Nobody who watches this cares about Destiny's Child music!!! If you wanna have them mess up a "Christmas" movie, make them sing a 20 minute video in Frosty Returns. I'm not buyin' if this dvd has 'em playin'!

I have the original release in VHS and it is way-worn, so I desperately want to buy it in DVD format. I tell you this so that you can understand how hard it is for me NOT to buy this release. I will wait for one that is not polluted with new age garbage. As soon as this excellent Christmas Classic shows up in DVD format WITHOUT the modern commercial corruption, I will buy it, and maybe a few more to give to my loved ones as gifts. Release without music videos, and I will purchase!

Go Rudolph! Go!

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is THE classic Rankin/Bass Animagic Christmas special. I could not imagine a holiday season going by without watching this at least once. Now, with this DVD, I can put away my "taped from television" copy and enjoy the complete, fully-restored splendor of Rudolph.For the first time since 1964, the complete, unedited version can be seen on this DVD. Throughout the years, the special has been trimmed to allow for more commercial time, including the removal of a longer version of "We Are Santa's Elves", a duet reprise of "We're A Couple Of Misfits." The edits where made as long ago as 1965, so getting the complete version is a real treat. It even restores Rudolph's Elf friend's proper name, "Hermey" as opposed to the edited "Herbie." Burl Ives has perhaps his most classic role as Sam the Snowman, singing many now-classic songs that were written for this program, such as "Holly-jolly Christmas" and "Silver and Gold." (Of course, he also sings Johnny Marks wonderful "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!") The Animagic puppets are never more welcome than at Christmas. This is a really nice DVD, and includes extras such as an introduction by Arthur Rankin and the complete "Fame and Fortune" song that replaced the reprise of "We're A Couple Of Misfits" in 1965. What a wonderful DVD!
